Brass Instrument Repair Course Overview

Brass Technician Course – 12 Month Course 

Course Plan 

1. Disassembly, Cleaning, & Maintenance of Brass Instrument Family

2. Solder Work (Including Silver Solder) 

3. Buffing & Solder Clean Up  

4. Brass Dent Work 

5. Trumpet – 1 month minimum

6. Trombone – 1 month minimum 

7. French Horn - (minor repairs) 1 month minimum

8. Euphonium/Baritone – 1 month minimum 

9. Tuba – 1 month minimum

10. Proper Play Test Brass Instrument Family

11. Bench Test Monthly Includes:  

   • Timed (To establish baseline repair time) 

   • Complete Disassembly/Reassembly  

   • Cleaning 

   • Accessible Dents 

   • Solder Work 

   • Solder Clean-Up  

Woodwind Repair Course Overview

Woodwind Technician Course - 12 Month Course 

 

Course Plan 

1. Disassembly, Cleaning, & Maintenance of Woodwind Family 

2. Solder Work (Including Silver Solder) 

3. Key, Pad, Cork Work

4. Buffing & Solder Clean Up  

5. Brass Woodwind Dent Work  

6. Clarinet – 1 month minimum

7. Bass Clarinet - 1 month minimum

8. Flute – 1 month minimum

9. Alto Sax – 1 month minimum 

10. Tenor Sax – 1 month minimum

11. Proper Play Test Woodwind Instrument Family

12. Bench Test Monthly Includes  

   • Timed (To establish baseline repair time) 

   • Complete Disassembly/Reassembly (including springs) 

   • Cleaning 

   • Accessible Dents 

   • Solder Work 

   • Solder Clean-Up  

   • Reassembly, Adjustments, & Play Test

Onsite/Travel Tech

Wagon/School Repair Tech Course – Minor Repairs - Brass & Woodwind

 

Duration: 4-6 Month Program

  • Disassembly & Cleaning/Maintenance of Brass/Woodwind Family  

  • Minor Solder/Solder Clean Up Work 

  • Minor Accessible Dents  

  • Tenon/Key/Neck Corks

  • Replacing 1-4 Pads 

  • Minor screw/spring issues

  • Minor key adjustments

  • Other repairs 15 minutes or less

  • Provide customers with on-site service, band supplies, and Orion Instruments

Woodwind Specialization – 6 Month Course (or equivalent time) 

  • Disassemble/Reassemble of Double Reed Family, and Bass Flute/Sax

  • Key Building, Fitting, and Swedging Work  

  • Brass Dent and Tone Hole Work  

  • Wood Crack/Tenon Replacement/Tone Hole Repair & Wood Finish

  • Proficient Leather/Cork/Synthetic Pad Work Across All Woodwind Instruments

  • Flute Head Joint Work and Mouthpiece Refacing

  • Manufacturing 1 

  • AutoCAD Design/Engineering  & 3D Printing

 

Brass Specialist Course – 6 Month Course (or equivalent time) 

  • Disassemble/Reassemble of French Horn Family and Trombone Family 

  • Buffing/Polishing & Lacquer Finishing  

  • Extensive Brass Dent Work  

  • Plating/Anodizing/Lacquering 

  • Instrument Building/Modifications

  • Machining 

  • Manufacturing 1 

  • AutoCAD Design/Engineering & 3D Printing
